International Women’s Day: Immigrant Women Leading with Courage, Cultural Intelligence, and Global Impact
Immigrant Women Leading with Courage, Perspective, and Purpose
Every year, International Women’s Day invites us to recognize the strength, leadership, and impact of women around the world. For immigrant women, the journey often includes navigating new cultures, redefining identity, and building careers in unfamiliar systems—all while contributing deeply to their communities and workplaces.
Through the Accentuate! Podcast, we have the privilege of amplifying the voices of immigrant and refugee women whose stories reflect resilience, courage, and wisdom. These women are not only succeeding professionally; they are shaping conversations about leadership, inclusion, migration, and global collaboration.
Their stories remind us that immigrant women bring something profoundly valuable to society: global perspective, cultural intelligence, determination, and empathy forged through lived experience.
Below are several women whose journeys embody the spirit of International Women’s Day.
Hourie Tafech: From Refugee Camp to PhD and Global Advocacy
Hourie Tafech’s journey is a powerful testament to resilience and purpose. Born and raised as a Palestinian refugee in Lebanon, she spent more than two decades living in a refugee camp where instability and limited opportunity were part of daily life. Interview Transcript
Despite these circumstances, Hourie pursued education relentlessly. After completing her studies in Lebanon, she moved to Malta, where she co-founded Spark15, a refugee-led organization that became the first refugee-led initiative in the European Union recognized by the United Nations. Interview Transcript
Her advocacy work eventually brought her to the United States, where she completed a PhD in Global Affairs at Rutgers University, focusing on refugee and migration studies.
But Hourie’s mission extends beyond personal achievement. Her work centers on ensuring that refugees themselves are included in conversations about policy and solutions.
“You cannot solve the refugee issue without the refugee input. It simply doesn’t work.” Interview Transcript
“You are not investing in me. You are investing in a cause.” Interview Transcript
Hourie’s story is a powerful reminder that lived experience is not a limitation—it is expertise.
Dr. Armine Arustamyan: Leadership Anchored in Values
Dr. Armine Arustamyan’s journey reflects both intellectual rigor and deep personal conviction. Born and raised in Armenia during the collapse of the Soviet Union, she originally pursued physics before adapting to a rapidly changing environment and building a distinguished career in nonprofit leadership and finance.
Today she serves as a Chief Financial Officer in a global research organization working to prevent future pandemics, contributing to scientific work that protects communities worldwide.
What distinguishes Dr. Arustamyan’s leadership is her grounding in values instilled early in life—respect for others, humility, and a commitment to meaningful work.
“My parents taught me to treat people equally, respect them, and value their contributions.” Interview with Armayne
“Don’t run after temporary values. Stay anchored to what matters to you and the people around you.” Interview with Armayne
Her perspective reminds us that true leadership is not defined by status, but by the principles that guide our decisions and relationships.
Hira Aftab: Reclaiming Refugee Narratives Through Storytelling
Hira Aftab’s life across Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and the United Kingdom shaped her understanding of identity, migration, and belonging. Today, she channels that global perspective into her work as founder of Our World Too, an initiative focused on restoring dignity to refugee narratives.
Through storytelling, advocacy, and dialogue, Hira challenges dominant narratives that portray displaced communities only as victims rather than as individuals with agency, talent, and voice.
Her work emphasizes the importance of communication and representation in shaping public understanding.
“You have to be creative with how you reach people… you have to communicate in a way that will reach them.”
“Make sure your voice is heard and your work is recognized.” Interview with Hara Aftab
Hira’s work demonstrates how storytelling can transform perceptions and influence systems.
Cassandra Patrovani: Cultural Intelligence in Leadership
Cassandra Patrovani’s work highlights the growing importance of cultural intelligence in global leadership. Her perspective challenges organizations to move beyond performative diversity efforts and toward deeper cultural understanding.
Cassandra emphasizes that inclusive leadership requires curiosity, humility, and the willingness to engage across differences.
“Cultural curiosity is essential for leaders navigating a global workplace.”
“Real inclusion begins when we move from assumptions to genuine understanding.”
Her voice reminds leaders that building inclusive workplaces requires intentional learning and openness.
Nicole Blanc: Strength in Complexity
Nicole Blanc’s career journey reflects the reality many professionals face: leadership rarely follows a straight line. Her experiences across different environments have shaped a perspective that values adaptability and self-awareness.
Nicole challenges the idea that professionals must fit into neat categories in order to succeed.
“Not fitting neatly into a box isn’t a weakness—it’s often a sign of breadth and resilience.”
“Awareness doesn’t diminish our strengths. It refines them.”
Her story highlights the importance of embracing complexity rather than resisting it.
Katarina Spackova: Determination and Opportunity
Katarina Spackova’s story reflects a common thread in many immigrant journeys: recognizing opportunity and pursuing it with determination.
Her perspective captures the balance between gratitude and responsibility that defines many immigrant experiences.
“You can have a really good life, but you have to work for it.”
“I decided I was going to take the opportunity I was given and make the best of it.”
Her message speaks to the power of perseverance and intentional effort.
